The official start of the 2024 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which will run until Monday 26 August. Artists from 58 countries will be represented at the Fringe this August, with 849 shows from Scotland and 608 from Edinburgh itself. With a vision to give anyone a stage and everyone a seat, at this year’s Fringe the average ticket price is less than £13. There are 456 free shows and another 686 using the ‘pay what you want’ or ‘pay what you can’ model, ensuring Fringe audiences can experience a variety of work at an accessible cost.

The Business Of Events Publishes Latest International Planner Sentiment Report 2024
The Business of Events (TBOE) has today published its latest annual International Planner Sentiment Report for 2024, created in partnership with Meet in Ireland and IBTM World. The annual report, which was first published in 2020, uses desk-based research to track the sentiment of planners in ten specific areas to determine the key factors influencing their choice of destination. The audiences surveyed include planners from corporate, association, agency and incentive & reward across the UK, Europe and North America.

For one glorious day on 11 July, the live events industry came together at the Backup Village Fete to raise much needed funds for supporting those working in the industry when they need it most. This year’s event smashed all expectations, raising a record breaking £56,300 on the day. Even the weather could not resist a day out, as un-forecast sunshine made a welcome appearance for the duration of the event. “The Parish of Backup has its own micro-climate,” laughed Vice Chair of Backup and Mayor of the Parish Fete, Lee Dennison.

Broadwick Group Launches Charity To Enhance Community Engagement
Venue operator Broadwick Group has unveiled its new charity, 9.8, aimed at enhancing community engagement and accessibility at its venues, including the largest, Drumsheds. Since opening the 15,000-capacity North London venue in September 2023, the charity has distributed 5,000 free event tickets and partnered with local charities to offer subsidised space. Named after the Earth’s average gravitational pull of 9.8 meters per second squared, the charity aspires to create “centres of cultural gravity” where diverse groups can experience music, art, and culture.

DHP Family To Take Over Nottingham Venue With 100-Year History
One of Nottingham’s most cherished venues, with a history spanning nearly 100 years, is set to reopen this September under the ownership of DHP Family. The 2,500-capacity venue, which recently operated as a Pryzm nightclub, will return to its original name, The Palais, just in time to celebrate its centenary in 2025. Local promoter and venue owner DHP Family is leading a rejuvenation project to restore the space on Lower Parliament Street. The refurbishments include a new stage and PA system.

The Loop Launches Drug Checking Online Training Courses
Drug checking service The Loop has unveiled a series of online training courses aimed at delivering more in-depth knowledge of the drug market, drug use, and harm reduction. The upcoming courses cover a range of topics, including the latest trends in the UK drug market, responses to drug use at music festivals and outdoor events, and deep dives into substances such as MDMA and ketamine. Specific courses also focus on drink spiking, drug-facilitated sexual assault, harm reduction theories and chemsex.

The engagement and access that The Power of Events UK has across all 7 sectors of the industry, enables data gathering and in-depth research projects to be delivered confidently and consistently. This will be primarily facilitated through the Events Industry Insight App launched in 2024.

By bringing the industry and university partners together, research projects will be designed to deliver real benefits to the industry in terms of trend analysis, insights and performance improvements.
